:) ABCS
We are sorry that we have not been maintaining our site. You know how life can get in the way! We are still here, but we simply don't have time to maintain our adventures, nor the website, between our jobs, raising our little guy (he is getting so big!!) and working on our fixer upper house. We really miss being active, but we will keep the website, in the event that we are able to continue where we left off. In the meantime, keep Rediscovering Ohio, friends! :) ABCS

It's hard to believe that are celebrating 2 years of Rediscovering Ohio! Where has the time gone? I know too that we've had a VERY long absence. For that, we do apologize. We've had a lot going on in our personal lives. On that note, we have a very BIG announcement---- we are pleased to welcome the newest member to our history loving team- James. Jimmy joined us on January 9 of this year, and we are so in love! We are very much looking forward to continuing our travels around Ohio with our little Jimmy. He is truly a blessing and we look forward to all of the little adventures that life will throw our way! :) ABCS Hi Friends! I hope you are all doing well. As always, Mark and I have been keeping busy with our new house. We have a gazillion projects that we are in the middle of, and we are excited for spring to come (soooo over this snow stuff!!) I just wanted to take this moment to say "Happy Birthday Ohio!" I hope that you all did something fun to celebrate the 210th birthday of our fine state this weekend. Mark and I went to visit one of our favorite haunts, the West Side Market in Cleveland. As a side note about the WSM, it is looking absolutely fabulous after its head-to-toe cleaning after the January fire that closed the market for three weeks. If you have not done so yet, now, more than ever is the best time to visit Cleveland's West Side gem :) We are excited to get out and do some more sight-seeing this spring and summer- after all, it's another big milestone year for Ohio- the Bicentennial of the Battle of Lake Erie is this summer (woot woot!!) Well friends, it's back to the grind of home renovations for us, but we'll see you again real soon! :) ABCS Hi Friends!
We are enjoying our many adventures in the world of home-ownership. We presently have ripped-up drywall in our lower-level, a torn up bathroom upstairs and flooring in need of replacement all over.... that doesn't even count the (not-so) fabulous teal and orange office that I am currently working out of, the hallway and entire downstairs in need of painting. Eek! On a positive note, I finally got our moving announcements ready for ordering... one little check off my impossibly long list :) I miss visiting places around the great Buckeye state... I can't wait for spring. I am going to be SURE that we get out and visit some markers! Miss you all! :) ABCS Dearest Friends, I want to take a quick moment to wish you all the happiest New Year! Mark and I are looking forward to 2013 and the adventures it will bring. We never could have predicted all that 2012 would bring our way, so here's to an even better 2013! We are very much looking forward to documenting more markers and sharing our journey with you. We will soon have to do a post that shares the one marker that we have covered since purchasing our home. Blessings in 2013, ABCS Hi Friends!
I just wanted to take a moment to explain our absence from the blogosphere... WE BOUGHT A HOUSE! I think that's enough said :) We are still committed to our Rediscovering Ohio project, but in order for us to get moved in before the end of the month, we have had to throw 110% of our efforts and spare time into all of the things that come with the purchase of a fixer-upper home. On top of our new home purchase, we have a lot of other things going on in our personal and professional lives, which make traveling around the state a near impossibility for the moment. We will still be blogging about some of our adventures... I have a couple reserved from the summer to share with you still, and I am confident that there will be some new posts as well (check back after Thanksgiving *hint, hint*). I will also update our Twitter and Instagram more frequently, as I can do that on the go. Bear with us friends, we will be back in full swing soon! Thanks, ABCS :) PS: I had full plans on sharing photos with this post, but the camera is currently residing at the house, where there is no computer, nor internet......sooo how about a few cruddy cell phone pics? Sure! Hi Friends! This Sunday, Mark and I had to go to the east side of town. While we were there, we decided to stop and see the sights. We had to make it back to the southern suburbs by a certain time, so we decided to stick to more familiar territory- downtown (we are west siders, through and through- never fails, we ALWAYS get lost on the east side!!) After talking it over, we thought that we would go to the lake by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame- and Browns Stadium. I'm pretty sure that we were the only two Clevelanders that forgot that Sunday was the Browns home opener... oops. Parking rates were astronomical due to the game. We figured that walking would do us some good, so we parked on the opposite end of downtown by the Jake (where parking was MUCH cheaper!) and hoofed it (me in heels-- eek!!) We first stopped at Marker #46-18 The Birthplace of Rock-n-Roll, located outside the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. All of the GuitarMania guitars have been re-assembled outside of the Rock Hall in a fabulous public art display after being scattered throughout the city (see some of our previous blog posts Downtown Cleveland- Part 2 and Part 3.) Across the street from the Rock Hall is the US Coast Guard District 9 Headquarters and the US Naval Reserve Center. Presently, there is some construction going on at the site, and the buildings are difficult to see. In front of the buildings is Marker #77-18 Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd. Due to the construction, we couldn't get a clear shot to photograph. According to the OHS website, the marker is in front of the Naval Reserve building, but I could not see it because of the construction... the only building I could see was that that belonging to the US Coast Guard (after reviewing my photos, I have a sneaking suspicion that the Naval Reserve building is gone...). At any rate, we photographed the marker dedicated to Admiral Kidd. I am anxious to go back and see the location of the marker once the construction is over! After we photographed the two markers, we headed behind the buildings to see the lake from Voinovich Park. Shame on us for never really having been to Voinovich Park... It's such a pretty view! We were able to get some great shots of the Cleveland skyline, the lake, the Rock Hall and the Browns Stadium. Okay, well, I guess that's it for now! I know I still need to share those CA pics too.... soon!! :) ABCS Click on Image to view largerTwo posts in one night! I'm on a roll!!! Okay, so this doesn't really pertain to Ohio history, but for those who follow our facebook and twitter feed know that Mark and I had a very busy weekend two weekends ago (I think... Aug. 11 and 12). On the 11 we were in PIB, and the very next day, we were on the opposite end of the state near Geneva at the Great Lakes Medieval Faire, where my sister and her now fiance were performing. That day, Eben (my soon-to-be brother-in-law) proposed to my sister Haley during their last performance. I promised photos to the cast and all of the family members, so here they are! Finally... sorry for the delay everyone. These are photos from two different cameras... our camera's photos are first, followed by photos from my dad's camera. I have included photos both from the proposal and from the Faire itself. Please feel free to download any of the photos that you would like! If you would like a higher resolution file, please email me at [email protected]. Thanks for visiting our site, :)ABCS Click on Image to View LargerHi Friends! Whew! It has been a busy few weeks! Good news is, I have LOTS of photos to share with you over the next few weeks... we've been up to a lot of stuff, both for Rediscovering Ohio and in our personal lives, so it's been tricky keeping up with all of the photo edits and blogging, but slowly, we are getting there. On August 11, Mark and I took his parents over to Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island. If you have never been there, you should go.... so much to do and see there! Our friends at the Miller Ferry were gracious enough to provided us with round trip tickets and transportation while on the Island. To my new friend K at Miller Ferry, a HUGE THANK YOU to you! We truly had a blast. Before arriving at the Miller Dock, we made a pit stop at the Cheesehaven in Port Clinton. The Cheesehaven is legendary and has been around forever! It has every type of cheese and hard sausage imaginable, along with wines, jams, candies and a deli. You have to pass it to get to the Miller Dock, so you might as well make a stop and indulge yourself! (Incidentally, we purchased some chocolate cheese- it tastes just like fudge... no joke! We also picked up some summer sausage and some six year aged cheddar- delish!!) In a summer of record temps, of course, the one day we had planned months in advance was a little chilly... get on a boat that is clipping across the lake, or on a tiny island where the wind blows and oh my! Let's just say that hot coffee was very welcome at dinner time :) We had fun despite the cooler temps. South Bass Island is chock full of history. There are five OHS historical markers in all. On this day, we covered three of them (aww... what a shame! I guess we will just have to go back!) Our first stop, after obtaining our golf cart at Island Rental was Perry's Victory and International Peace Monument. Perry's Monument does not have an OHS marker, but it is on the National Register of Historic Places. Perry's Monument is also the third tallest of the National Monuments, behind the Washington Monument (tallest) and the St. Louis Arch (second tallest). When you go to the monument, make sure to go to the top. At the time of writing this post, the cost to go up to the top is $3/person cash only. It is worth it.... it's a FANTASTIC view! Perry's Monument commemorates one of the most pivotal battles of the War of 1812 and one of the most important naval battles of modern times. It also commemorates the lasting peace established between the United States, Canada and Great Britain. The monument was advocated in part by John Eisenmann who was the architect of the Old Arcade in Cleveland (see our posts on Downtown Cleveland, Part 2 and Part 3 and John Eisenmann, as well as our video clip). September 10, 2013 will be the bicentennial of Perry's Victory, and there's a lot of festivities going on to celebrate! Click here for the details on the festivities, and make sure you hop on the Miller Ferry to get over to PIB next summer! After our time at the monument, we decided that we were cold and hungry, so we went for a bite to eat. K at Miller Ferry recommended this great place called T&J's Smokehouse. It was delicious! We had also had a great view of the mechanical bull :) It was tons of fun to watch!! After our meal, we walked across the street to DeRivera Park to hit up Marker #13-62 in De Rivera Park. We also made friends with the seals in the park... just take a look at the photos, you'll see them :) After spending some time in the park, we then crossed the street towards the marina and documented Marker #5-62- the First Ship to Shore Radio Broadcast. After spending time in the main part of the Island, we carted ourselves down to the South Bass Island State Park. It's a beautiful stone beach with a gorgeous view of the lake. It's a fun place to go on a hot day to cool off. It was not a hot day, so we just took pictures. When we finished at the state park, we headed to the South Bass Island Light, Marker #9-62 (also on the National Register of Historic Places). This was the first time either of us had ever been to the light. It was fantastic! I had researched getting a tour of the place, but tours aren't available on the weekends... next time I guess! It is a pretty little property with a gorgeous view, and was totally worth going, even though we couldn't go inside. When we finished at the light, we headed back to Island Rental and deposited our super-fun golf cart and headed towards the ferry for home! We were sad to leave the Island, but we will just have to be sure to come back soon! Thanks PIB for the great time with my fabulous in-laws (they had fun too!!) and to Miller Ferry and Island Rental for providing our transportation to and from the Island and around the Island. :) ABCS PS: Silly me- I forgot to mention that we capped off a fabulous day with an amazing sunset that we watched from Port Clinton. It was fantastic, and we caught some beautiful shots. God is truly an artist. -A Click on image to view largerHi Friends! I feel terrible that I have not done a blog update for awhile. We were in California for a wedding and it's taken a little while to get back into the swing of things. I don't have too terribly much to say on this post, but these photos were taken on July 2, the same day as the Star Spangled Spectacular. We had the chance to wander around downtown before the event, so we took the opportunity to seek out more markers. We also located a second marker for the Arcade that I had this nagging suspicion that we had missed on our first visit to the Arcade (I suppose I shouldn't doubt my intuition!!). We had fun wandering down by the Jake (yes... I still call it "the Jake", but to be technical, it's now called "Progressive Field"), we took a stroll through Erie St. Cemetery (may I advise you, dear friends to only do this during the day and never at night... it is very dangerous at night), walked down to the Cleveland Grays armory and wandered around the Theater District. I am still debating what I would like to share with you in my next post... California or Ohio... maybe both :) :)ABCS Click on image to view larger |
